Video Ambient Light

Quick Verdict

Video Ambient Light is a free browser extension for Chrome and Firefox that turns video colors into a moving background beyond the player. It may suit people who want ambient lighting while watching supported videos, though its beta status makes compatibility worth checking before relying on it.

Key Features

The extension supports YouTube videos, including music videos, livestreams and Shorts, as well as TikTok and Instagram Reels. Its central function is to display colors from the video as a moving background across the screen.

The website says video frames are processed locally and that frames, playback URLs, browsing history and settings are not uploaded. It also states that the extension uses storage permission and listed video domains, with no analytics, advertising or remote code. These are useful privacy details to review alongside the extension’s permissions in your browser.

The extension is described as free, with no paid subscription. It is in beta, and compatibility testing is ongoing as browsers and video platforms change. The website does not clearly state supported browser versions, system requirements, customization options, or whether support and updates are provided; verify these details on the official website if they matter to you.

Who this is for

This is best suited to viewers who want video colors to extend beyond the player while watching content on YouTube, TikTok or Instagram Reels. It may be less suitable if you need stable compatibility across specific browser versions, or if you expect video downloading or access to protected content: the terms limit use to personal viewing and prohibit downloads, access bypass and protected-content unlocking.
